Motorsport Australia, the governing body for car racing in the country, has included esports champion Cody Latkovski in its annual awards event.
The Motorsport Australia Awards celebrates Australians’ achievements in the world of both domestic and international motorsport across the previous year. This also includes officials and marshals, as well as drivers across the spectrum from karting to rally. For the 2020 awards, held in Melbourne and celebrating the events of the 2019 calendar, this included Latkovski’s esports exploits.
In the inaugural FIA Motorsport Games, held in November 2019 at Vallelunga, Latkovski took the win in the Digital Cup. This event, using GT Sport, was one of six motorsport disciplines at the Games, each holding equal weighting.
Latkovski, who finished as runner-up to Hizal in last year’s GT Sport World Final, was Team Australia’s only gold medalist at the event. Not only that, his victory in the Digital Cup helped Australia to joint second in the medal table, along with host nation Italy, with Brenton and Stephan Grove taking bronze in the GT Cup.
That already earned Latkovski a place at the FIA’s own annual prize-giving gala, alongside the FIA-Certified GT Sport Online Championship winners from Monaco. The Australian recently returned to action in the FIA event, finishing runner-up to Takuma Miyazono in the Sydney World Tour.
There’ll be a chance for Latkovski to defend his title in 2020, as the FIA Motorsport Games returns for a second outing. The action moves from Italy to France, and the Circuit Paul Ricard at Le Castellet, 20 miles east of Marseille.
