McLaren F1 team able to celebrate despite late race issues in France

Carlos Sainz finished 6th, Lando Norris 10th in France Sunday.

McLaren F1 boss Andreas Seidl celebrated a strong performance from the team in Sunday’s F1 French Grand Prix despite late race problems causing driver of the day Lando Norris to drop to tenth.

One of the good news stories to come out of the French Grand Prix weekend was the performance of McLaren. Languishing at the back in recent years, this was hardly a full return to form for the team, but the weekend suggests that the work is going in the right direction.

Locking out the third row of the grid on Saturday, both Carlos Sainz and Norris were on for strong results until a hydraulic problem in the closing stages of the race saw Norris drop back several spots.

Sixth for Sainz and tenth for Norris keeps the gap with Renault in the constructors’ standings at three-points.

“I’m very happy because we could also show in the race today that the pace was there,” said Seidl. “Of course, it’s a shame to lose these positions with Lando at the end but it was a great job from Lando. He had to battle it through.

“We had some hydraulic issues in the second half of the race with him, affecting braking, gear shifting, everything. So, really happy with the outcome of the race.”

After a strong performance from both cars across the weekend as a whole, expectations of what the team can achieve will naturally rise, but Seidl was keen to keep two feet on the ground and not get carried away.

“I think it’s still too early to say actually,” said Seidl. “We’ve seen since the beginning of the season that some cars are faster than other cars depending on the tracks so, we have to see how it goes in the next couple of weeks.

“The important thing I that we keep developing the car, we see the results on track, and we keep understanding the car better and better. The drivers are doing a great job, so I’m really pleased.”
