Audi, like the rest of VW Group, is getting ready for a big electric push, and that means more production sites for the fancy new electric cars. And Audi announced yesterday that the Robert Downey Jr-approved e-tron GT will be produced alongside the R8 at its Böllinger Höfe facility near Neckarsulm.
Starting in 2020, the two cars will be made side by side by some of Audi’s most talented workers. That means that the plant has to be expanded by more than 100,000 sq ft.
“Since the Böllinger Höfe was already created in the design phase as a small-series production facility with innovative and flexible production processes, that gives us the ideal conditions to produce the e-tron GT alongside the Audi R8,” says Production Manager Wolfgang Schanz. “Here a unique combination of craftsmanship and smart factory is coming to life.”
The R8 is too handmade for its body to made side-by-side, though. That means that the plant’s body shop has to have a mezzanine level added and in the future painted R8 and e-tron GT bodies will be stored in the plant’s basement.
The work to allow the plant to do this has already started and part of the R8’s body shop was moved to a location in Böckingen, Heilbronn, just down the street from the R8 plant. According to Audi, about 40 of the 150 employees who build the R8 have been working from this new location since January.
Work on the R8’s plant is set to continue through the fall of 2019 with the production of the e-tron GT set to begin in 2020.
