NASCAR Cup Charlotte qualifying results: William Byron makes history with pole

Byron put down a lap of 183.424 to score his second pole of the season and the second of his career.

Talk about parity. All three of NASCAR’s manufacturers occupy the top three starting spots for Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series Coca-Cola 600.  Chevy will lead the way with William Byron leading the Ford of Aric Almirola and the Toyota of defending race winner Kyle Busch.

The 21-year-old Hendrick Motorsports driver is the youngest pole winner in the 60-year history of the event.

Byron had to endure a final run by teammate Alex Bowman.  Two weeks ago, Byron had the provisional pole at Dover, until the last run of the session by Chase Elliott who took the top spot.

There was no theft Thursday as Byron’s lap of 183.424 around the 1.5-mile oval stood all challengers.  Sunday’s 600 will be Byron’s second start in NASCAR’s longest race.  Last year Byron started 21st and finished 39th.

Austin Dillon in a Chevy and Kevin Harvick in a Ford round out the top five.

Thursday’s single car qualifying runs were the first at Charlotte in five years after the sport abandoned group qualifying a few weeks ago. Sunday’s race will also see NASCAR’s new high downforce lower horsepower package that was tweaked for last week’s All-Star Race get its biggest test in NASCAR’s longest race.

“Did you watch Kansas?” Logano joked. “It’s the same thing.  That’s what this rules package has kind of promoted is that we’re so close to each other and to be able to clear someone or to really put yourself in the position you need to sometimes you’ve got to make those aggressive moves, whether it’s an aggressive block, maybe you’re pushing someone by, maybe you find yourself four-wide like the did down the frontstretch.  I didn’t think that was possible, and it really kind of wasn’t, but they got through it somehow down the front straightway here at Charlotte.  A lot of it is the rules package.  We’ll see that continue.”

Daniel Suarez will start sixth followed by Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, Daniel Hemric and Kurt Busch rounding out the top 10.

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway will get the green flag just after 6:00 p.m. Sunday with live coverage on Fox.

Byron started 21st and finished 39th in last year’s 600.
