Incoming Polestar 3 will deliver up to 517hp

Electric SUV is said to go 'deeper than just straight-line acceleration' – but will still be hugely fast

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Polestar regarding its upcoming SUV. We got our first glimpse of the 3 wrapped head-to-toe at the end of 2021, followed by a glossy prototype earlier this year with the promise of a full reveal by the end of the year. Here we are in September and Polestar has released yet another teaser of the car ahead of its production-ready debut.

But sight of the shapely rear is not the big news here. The company has announced some of the SUV’s performance credentials, claiming that it’ll go “deeper than just straight-line acceleration.” All cars will come with a “rear-biased” dual-motor system, complete with dual-clutch electric torque vectoring on the rear motor. So while it shares its underpinnings with the gigantic Volvo XC90, it should feel more responsive when it comes to driving. Relatively speaking, of course. And while straight-line speed may not be a priority, the optional Performance Pack apparently cranks the motors up to produce 517hp and 671lb ft of torque. Which sounds pretty face-melting to us.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Polestar 3 will come with a trick suspension system for maximum comfort. It comprises adaptive dampers and dual-chamber air suspension, with a computer making tiny adjustments every two milliseconds to keep the SUV’s ride in check. According to Polestar chief Thomas Ingenlath: “It’s this instant ability to transform from a comfortable cruiser to a sharp, agile performance car in less than the blink of an eye that makes Polestar 3 special as an electric performance SUV. It also benefits from a low centre of gravity and wide track for ultimate stability, and an exciting feeling behind the wheel.”

Sounds promising, then. And judging by the teaser image, it should be a handsome-looking thing, too, with a predictably trendy body-wide light bar. The good news is we won’t have long to wait until we get to see what the production car has to offer, with the Polestar 3’s grand unveiling taking place in Copenhagen next month. “Polestar 3 defines the SUV for the electric age and in designing it, we addressed some of the fundamentals of the archetype: proportions, stance and aerodynamics”, says Ingenlath. Expect the obligatory sloping roofline, then.
