Petrol vs diesel sales figures for the period of April-September 2020 have been released. 60,283 diesel cars and 2,89,854 petrol cars were sold during this period.
Out of the total sales, over 17% of the cars sold in India were diesels. Some of the contributing factors for this include rise in the cost of diesel cars post BS6 and the lower price difference between petrol and diesel fuels. Besides, OEMs like Maruti, Renault, Nissan, VW & Skoda no longer have oil burners in their product portfolio.
Over 50% of Toyota, Mahindra, Ford and Jeep buyers prefer diesels while Kia’s diesel numbers stand at 46.1% of their total sales. Buyers in the lower segments have shifted to petrol vehicles while those in the SUV and premium segments still prefer their diesels.
