Nyck De Vries is putting his Formula 1 dreams on hold to race for Mercedes in Formula E.
Formula 2 title points leader Nyck de Vries is heading to Formula E.
Mercedes announced that the F2 points leader will join former F1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne in the Mercedes’ inaugural Formula E driver lineup.
“Of course every young driver wants to be in Formula 1,” said de Vries, 24. “But when you get an opportunity like this with Mercedes, you need to grab it.”
With four races remaining in the F2 season, De Vries holds a commanding 59-point lead over runner-up Nicholas Latifi.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says that signing de Vries, a former McLaren junior driver, for Formula E does not end the driver’s Formula 1 dream.
“Why would it? Nyck is fast, young and intelligent. He can still get to Formula 1,” Wolf told the Leeuwarder Courant newspaper. “You never know what can happen in the future and what will come his way.”
Wolff also downplayed Mercedes’ hopes of winning the all-electric series in its first year of competition.
“We look forward to competing with the other German brands, Porsche, BMW and Audi,” Wolff said. “We ultimately want to fight for victories and the championship, but it’s not realistic for the first season.”
