Find of the Day: This No Reserve 1990 GLI has had a $30K Restoration

In the market for a new toy? Have we got the car for you. This 1990 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 16V is on in a no-reserve auction. And when you see its condition, you’ll know why it’s our Find of the Day.

Way back when, Volkswagen introduced the hot hatch category with the MK1 GTI. In a time when cars were choked by exhaust and emission standards, the zippy little car was a breath of fresh air. Enthusiasts started snapping up the quick bunnies and a performance icon was born. VW engineers smartly took all the fun-bits and added them to the Jetta, and just changed one little letter. The Jetta GLI was born.

For the second generation Golf and Jetta, Volkswagen kicked things up a notch. They added a dual-overhead-cam 16-valve engine. This quick-revving engine was added to both models and made these cars serious performers.

This 1990 Jetta GLI might be the cleanest example on the market. A few years back it went through a, get this, $30,000 Canadian restoration. That’s not a typo. It had a full engine rebuild, body work including a full respray of the (rare) Calypso metallic paint, and interior work. Take a look at all the photos to get an idea of how perfect this car is. Make sure to not only read the write-up on the car, but the auction comments as well. This restoration was a labor of love (or maybe obsession?).

So if you’re looking for the perfect Jetta GLI, peruse this no-reserve auction on As of this writing, the current bid is a hefty $7900. The auction ends this Friday, so the price is sure to go up. This ’90 GLI is in Blaine, Washington.
