Here's How Long You Will Wait For A New Tesla In 2023 In The US

Tesla’s estimated delivery times (for new orders), of all four electric car models available in the United States, noticeably decreased in the recent months.

In most cases, customers have to wait no longer than 1-2 months for a brand new car. It’s a natural outcome of the shrinking order backlog reported in late 2022. After a massive price reduction applied on January 12 (by 6.4-19.7 percent), and several minor price tweaks, the situation might change and we already saw some extension of the estimated order backlog. A big part of the boost was the eligibility for full $7,500 federal tax credit for new Model 3 and Model Y cars.

In today’s update, we will take a look at the Tesla estimated delivery times as of February 14, 2023, as it gives us an idea not only how long customers have to wait, but also a hint on which models are in higher demand or potentially might be more profitable (higher demand of particular versions).

Tesla Model 3

Starting alphabetically, the Tesla Model 3 is available two versions – the entry-level RWD and top-of-the-line Performance, which both might be delivered in February-March period, according to the company’s website. That’s regardless of the options.

The third version – Long Range AWD – has been put on hold (new orders) in North America in August, 2022 with a promise of a return in 2023, but nothing changed yet (there were some reports about a limited availability through Tesla’s existing inventory).

Tesla Model S

In the case of the Tesla Model S, the situation improved a lot and the estimated time for the car (both versions) is February-March, just like in the case of the Model 3.

A few months ago, customers had to wait up to four months for the Model S Long Range AWD version, and up to two months for the Plaid version. Now there is no differentiation.

Tesla Model X

The Tesla Model X is an interesting case to study, as the Plaid version requires up to 1-2 months of waiting: February-March, while the Long Range AWD requires 2-5 months: March-May.

That’s a clear indication that the base version still has some substantial queue of customers waiting. Tesla is willing to deliver cars earlier if someone will select the more expensive (by $10,000) Plaid version.

Anyway, the wait time is much shorter now than previously when customers had to wait up to 12 months in some cases (at least that was the estimate when placing a new order in October 2022). We guess that part of the answer why the time is now shorter is an increased production rate of the Model S/Model X duo.

Tesla Model Y

Finally, the Tesla Model Y, which is the most popular Tesla model. Several months ago, only the Performance version was easily available (1-2 months), while the Long Range AWD version required 3-6 months of waiting.

Now, Tesla indicates that the most popular version – Long Range AWD – can be delivered in 2-4 months (March-May window), while the Performance version remains available in a few weeks (February-March window).

That’s a very good sign for customers, who can more reasonably plan their car purchase.
