Toyota and Subaru have announced that it will reinforce its partnership by jointly developing a platform dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) of multiple vehicle sizes, including C- and D-segment sedans and SUVs.
As part of the deal, a C-segment BEV SUV will be prepared for sale under each company’s own brand, similar to a prior arrangement involving the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ. According to an official release, the platform will leverage on Subaru’s all-wheel drive technologies and Toyota’s experience with vehicle electrification.
In the case of the latter, Toyota has shared its plug-in hybrid technology with Subaru before in the form of the XV Hybrid, Subaru’s first-ever PHEV model. Currently, only Toyota offers a fully electric vehicle in the form of the C-HR EV and Izoa EV, while Subaru has none.
With the commercialisation of BEVs presenting a number of challenges, especially for a carmaker of Subaru’s size, a tie-up like this is a strategic move that may help alleviate development, costs and supply concerns. To this end, Subaru will now shift its existing BEV development resources to this new joint project.
No details about the project are available for now, including the number of motors and battery size the platform can handle. Both companies understand the urgent need to response to the new CASE (car connectivity, autonomous or assisted driving, new mobility or car-sharing, and electrified powertrains and components) domains that is resulting in the disintermediation of the automotive industry.
