The pessimists among us will look at the recently revealed Volkswagen Golf R Estate and shout angrily toward the heavens: “Why, VW, why? Why won’t you send this 315-hp wagon to the United States of America? Have we not suffered enough? What must we do to convince you that we, too, are deserving of a reasonably affordable vehicle that combines driver-oriented dynamics with superior cargo space?”
The optimists, however, will shun the dramatics. Instead, these folks will take a minute to appreciate the Golf R Estate’s nearly 60-cubic-feet of cargo space and near-two-ton towing capacity. Then, they will move on and simply find solace in the fact VW is sending us any variant of the most powerful eighth-generation Golf model—even if the stubbier rear end of the 2022 Golf R hatch means its cargo capacity falls a good deal short of its wagon counterpart. After all, in the land of trucks and SUVs that is the U.S., who are we to complain that VW is keeping the Golf R Estate away from our shores?
Plus, unlike the Golf R Estate, which comes strictly with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, our Golf R hatch offers an available six-speed manual gearbox—clutch pedal and all. That’s got to count for something, right?
Alas, it seems the grass is always greener on the other side. Even though the Golf R Estate lacks a proper stick shift and takes 0.2 second longer to accelerate from 0-62 mph (4.9 seconds for the wagon versus 4.7 ticks for the hatch), the pessimist within us can’t help but yearn for this all-wheel-drive VW wagon.
For now, however, we’ll simply have to take a deep breath and push the negativity deep down inside of us so we can express our gratitude for the forthcoming Golf R hatch and its three-pedal option. It may not offer the cargo-carrying capability of the Golf R Estate, but the Golf R hatch is still an impressive and practical Golf GTI-plus machine.
That said, those lucky enough to live in Europe can place an order for the new Golf R Estate this month. Plan on spending a pretty penny for this high-performance wagon, too, as its €51,585 starting sum (including 19% VAT) converts to approximately $61,000 at current exchange rates.
