Motorists warn of ‘increased income tax’ if petrol and diesel car ownership is banned

Previously, transport minister Trudy Harrison had called for the UK to move away from private car ownership to prioritise shared mobility options. This would be another step for the UK Government to move towards its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 with low carbon options suggested.

Despite this, many Express.co.uk readers have criticised the proposals, saying it would lead to drivers, manufacturers and insurance companies losing billions of pounds.

One reader, MikeM10, slammed the proposals saying it would lead to millions losing their jobs.

They questioned: “How many people on low incomes can’t afford a new car even with grants and can’t get to work without?

“You’d put millions on the dole and on your unemployment bill and many of those would be vital workers such as retail, food workers, carers etc. causing food shortages and a crisis in care.

“Banning the sale of new petrol and diesel is one thing but banning ownership is another.

“If the Government wants to ban ownership it needs to make grants to take privately owned petrol/diesel vehicles off the roads and for the low waged those need to be 100 percent towards a new electric vehicle of the same category, like for like.

“I somehow doubt the Government can afford a buy back scheme for all petrol and diesel vehicles.

“A natural phase out is better unless the Government wants to make 100 percent grants for a like for like vehicle to the low waged.”

Another driver, using the handle Terry2uk said: “So car manufacturers would lose billions of pounds and need the Government to repay their lost sales.

“Insurance companies would lose tens of millions of pounds and need the Government to take control of lost income.

“Oil and petrol revenue would lose Government billions in income.

“Who would cover that? Yes that’s right, increased income tax for everyone.
