Martin Lewis has recommended drivers take their car to Halfords to make use of their free service. Mechanics will look over five key areas of the vehicle which they can cause common problems and are crucial to your safety this winter.

Speaking on the Martin Lewis Money Show, Mr Lewis said: “Take your car to Halfords if you want a free winter car check.

“Book online, it checks your batteries, wipers, lights and more. No purchase necessary but they may try and upsell you.”

Halfords has confirmed that mechanics will check the health of car batteries and the condition of headlights and brake lights during the test.

The condition of a vehicle’s wiper blades and windscreen will also be checked which can prove vital this winter.

Windscreen wipers are crucial in cold weather to ensure drivers can clearly see the road surface through ice frost and rain.

Batteries are put under heavier strain in the winter and are one of the main reasons people call a breakdown service.

Meanwhile, faulty vehicle lights could prove difficult during the winter as there are long periods of darkness to contend with.

In bad weather, car lights could be crucial markers as to where a vehicle is in the spray so these must be kept up to standard.

Driving with faulty lights is also illegal and can see road users issued charges for driving a car in a dangerous condition.

Halfords also check what the vehicles’ MOT due date is as road users may have forgotten after delays to testing over the summer.

Halfords said: “Looking after your car is tricky for most people, especially if you’ve got a million things on your plate or if you’re not really sure what you’re doing.

“The winter is especially hard on cars, so it’s even more important than normal to keep up with this.

“Halfords can help! Our fully-trained team can give your car a free check* to make sure it’s in top condition.”

Halfords says drivers can upgrade to their premium 10 point car health check for just £15.

This package will see drivers offered a more thorough check on their vehicles which will include a detailed look at the car’s tyres and oil levels.

KwikFit also offers a free vehicle health check to ensure cars are well prepared for the cold months ahead.

Mechanics from the garage will also check vehicles tyres, batteries and wiper blades for splits or damages.

However, alongside this KwikFit have also promised to check drives coolant and antifreeze as well as their windscreen wash system.

They have even offered to top up the vehicles screen wash if it is low to ensure road users are fully prepared.

They say that once a check has been completed technicians will discuss the report with drivers to offer any extra guidance to keep a vehicle in a good condition.
