Electric scooters will be provided from up to three operators under the trial in a desperate attempt to encourage greener forms of transport on the road. Transport for London (TfL), London Councils and London boroughs are working together on the new plans which will see rental scooters available for hire.
All London boroughs will be involved in the trial which is likely to be the largest of its kind across the UK.
London Boroughs will control parking locations while authorities can also designate certain no-go areas.
These will be strictly out of bounds for riders with the scooters automatically set to slow down and stop if they are driven into these areas.
Go slow areas will also be installed which will set limits of just 8mph compared to regular top speeds of 15mph.
The total number of scooters has not yet been determined but TfL expects this to be between 60 and 150 e-scooters across the capital.
Mayor Philip Glanville, Chair of London Councils Transport and Environment Committee said that the trials will be “regularly reviewed.
He added that any electric scooter providers who were invited to join the trial needed to demonstrate safety provisions.
He said: “We are going ahead with this year-long trial to explore whether rented e-scooters could be a positive addition to London’s transport network, complementing walking, cycling and public transport and supporting our city-wide response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Running the trial safely is vital and operator performance will be regularly reviewed.
“All companies applying to join the trial will need to demonstrate they have plans in place to keep our streets clear and protect riders, pedestrians and other road users – including more vulnerable Londoners.
“We will also be looking for operators that understand London’s unique and diverse local communities and infrastructure, and can work with London Councils, TfL and individual boroughs.”
In a major warning, TfL says that privately owned e-scooters will not be covered under the trial and will remain illegal across the capital and the UK.
They warn that the Metropolitan Police will continue to work with riders and enforce the legislation where necessary.
The electric scooters will still be banned from riding on pavements but they will be allowed the same space as cyclists.
This means the new tolls can be used across the capital’s Cycle Superhighway network and on the side of many busy roads.
Duncan Roberts, General Manager of electric scooter developers Dott said the new tools can be “vital in supporting public transport”.
He said: “We welcome the news that TfL is working on plans with London Councils and boroughs for a trial of rental e-scooters in the capital.
“We’re also very supportive of the high bar for safety and scooter quality set by TfL today.
“Data from several European cities where e-scooters are part of the mobility infrastructure clearly demonstrate how vital they can be in supporting public transport, cutting the number of car journeys and contributing to improved air quality.
“This trial will hopefully be the first step toward a green revolution for urban mobility in the capital.
“We’re confident that Londoners will not only embrace the flexibility that e-scooters bring, but will also back calls for greater availability and access across the city.”
