Chevrolet Performance Launches 1,000 HP ZZ632 Crate Engine

When it comes to big-inch, big-power crate engines, there’s a new sheriff in town, and his badge is bowtie shaped. Yep, Chevrolet Performance just announced a 632-cubic-inch (that’s over 10 liters for the metric crowd) big-block monster that belts out a tick over 1,000 hp and a whopping 876 lb-ft of twist. But as the guy said in the infomercial, “But wait, there’s more.” You see, this is a street engine, and it makes this power on pump gas and without any power adders.

What’s the Biggest Crate Engine From Chevrolet Performance?

“This is the biggest, baddest crate engine we’ve ever built,” said Russ O’Blenes, director of the Performance and Racing Propulsion Team. “The ZZ632 sits at the top of our unparalleled crate engine lineup as the king of performance. It delivers incredible power, and it does it on pump gas.”

What Does the New ZZ632 Rev To?

While the ZZ632 makes peak power at 6,600 rpm, it easily revs out to a recommended maximum of 7,000 rpm. Fuel is delivered by eight port injectors with the big-block breathing through high-flow CNC-machined aluminum cylinder heads that feature symmetrical ports. Traditionally, big-blocks have been designed with variations in port shape from cylinder to cylinder. But in this case, all eight of the ZZ632’s intake ports have the same length, volume, and layout. Similarly, all of the ZZ632’s exhaust ports are identical. This symmetry ensures individual cylinders all produce similar power.

These RS-X Symmetrical Port cylinder heads are named for powertrain engineer Ron Sperry, who designed them as one of his final accomplishments after more than 50 years working on General Motors performance and racing engines. Sperry also introduced symmetrical ports to Chevy’s iconic Small Block V-8 with the Gen III LS1 engine that debuted in the 1997 Chevrolet Corvette. And we all know how successful that design has been!

The ZZ632’s iron block shares a mold with Chevrolet Performance’s ZZ572 crate engines, but the castings are machined to accommodate the massive 632-cubic-inch displacement. The bores grew by 0.040 inch compared to the 572-cubic-inch V-8s, with most of the displacement gain coming from a stroke that’s 0.375 inch longer! To provide clearance for that long stroke, engineers modified both the block as well as the connecting rods. A forged rotating assembly and four-bolt main caps ensure strength and durability. During development, a single ZZ632 engine survived over 200 simulated dragstrip passes on a dyno! The ZZ632 will debut at the 2021 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

What Was Chevrolet Performance’s Most Powerful Crate Engine Before the ZZ672?

Aside from the discontinued supercharged LT5, which put out 755 hp, the biggest mill Chevrolet Performance offered was the naturally aspirated ZZ572 big-block. This Dominator-fed big-bore beast pumps out 727 hp and 680 lb-ft of torque. Four-bolt mains along with forged internals gives it strength, and a pair of high-flowing 310cc heads combined with a solid-roller cam help the good times roll. The ZZ632 adds 60 cubic inches to the party and makes an additional 277 hp; even better, it does it on 93-octane pump gas!

Are There Any Other Big-Power Chevrolet Performance Crate Engines?

The other big-power crate engines offered by Chevrolet Performance would be the LSX-454 and the hard-to-find LSX-454R. If you can find an LSX-454R, expect to shell out around 20 grand, but for that you get a solid-roller race-prepped mill that revs to 7,100 and puts out over 700 hp. For around 15 grand you can get a tamer and more street friendly LSX-454 mill that still churns out an impressive 627 hp. Either way, you will have big-block power and displacement in a compact package perfect for your hot rod project.
