Experts at the Caravan and Motorhome Club has warned owners of heavier trailers over 3.5 tonnes will be heavily affected by the new London rule. The city’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) rule is set to expand to cover many outer London boroughs on October 25.
The new driving law will see drivers forced to pay the £12.50 daily charge if their petrol and diesel cars do not meet the emissions targets.
However, they warn vehicles that weigh more than 3.5 tonnes will be issued a heavier £100 fine.
Most drivers will never be hit with this higher fee as only those who passed their test after January 1997 can tow heavier trailers under current rules.
But it means older drivers who have heavier trailers or large motorhomes for longer staycation trips could be hit with the fine.
Meanwhile, any caravan owners who travel into the capital who do not meet the strict ULEZ rules will still be hit with the lower daily fee.
The Caravan and Motorhome Club have warned drivers who don’t pay the ULEZ charge could also be hit by penalties.
The penalties currently stand at £1,000 for those who tow vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes.
They also warn penalties for motorhomes will dramatically rise next year in a major warning to owners.

They said: “ULEZ requirements affect petrol and diesel cars as well as motorhomes.
“For cars, the required standards are Euro 4 for petrol and Euro 6 for diesel, generally meaning cars registered from 2006 or 2015 respectively.
“For campervans and motorhomes, diesel standards are Euro 6 for smaller vehicles (from 2015) and Euro VI for larger ones (from 2016).
“Check an individual vehicle carefully as some manufacturers introduced these standards ahead of the mandatory dates.
