While most automakers are thinking of excuses–aka, solid market research–NOT to put manual transmissions into their cars, Cadillac is delivering reasons for the old technology, confirming the arrival of the CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing with a six-speed box. To be fair, Cadillac said it was going to do this, but it’s good to get confirmation.
To convince themselves–and don’t get us wrong, we’re happy about it–the company did a study and found 66 percent of American adults do, in fact, know how to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission. Of those who don’t, 40 percent are interested in learning. It also found that more than half of American adults have owned or leased a car with a manual, and that interest in driving or learning to drive a manual is higher among those with $75,000 or more in annual household income (64 percent interested) and those between 18-34 in age (62 percent interested). I’d guess we’d find a few Cadillac buyers in that demo.
“A lot of work went into making the manual possible in both vehicles. It’s something we know V-Series buyers want and it’s something we knew we had to have, so we used innovative processes to make it happen,” said Mirza Grebovic, Cadillac performance variant manager. “There are a few ways to really get that connected feel with the vehicle and the manual transmission is probably the most obvious one.”
Cadillac notes that several parts on the Vs were made with 3D printing, including the medallion on top of the shifter, and it does look nice, as well as a couple of HVAC ducts and an electrical harness bracket, but, a manual!
The company hasn’t officially announced the output numbers for the Blackwings, but we’ll speculate that the CT5 version will get a 6.2-liter V8 making around 600 hp while the smaller CT4-V Blackwing could come with a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 delivering around 450 hp. Both will come standard with the stick; upgraded models get the 10-speed automatic. Unfortunately they won’t get the Blackwing engine that we heard so much about.
The 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing go on sale next summer.
