Wagon fans, rejoice! According to a well-placed source within the Bavarian brand, it looks like the Audi RS4 Competition is coming to America. Due to Covid, when we drove the RS5 Competition and the Euro-only RS4 Competition in Spain, the American wave of journalists got left in the hands of German PR colleagues. It was a touch odd, as usually, the American PRs travel with the American journos to prevent exactly the following. After a wonderful session on the track in the hot Audi wagon, we said something to the effect of, “Man, this car would rule in America.” To our surprise, a Audi employee said that the RS4 is coming. As soon as the words were spoken, the other Audi peeps in the room tried to play it off as a mistake, a slip of the tongue, language barrier, etc. But we’d heard what we heard (and may have fanned the flames of said rumor on social media).
Fast forward six months and according to our source, yup, the RS4 is going to be sold in the States. The decision to do so is apparently based on how crazy-well the sexy RS6 sold here. All 2,000 examples were snapped up by well-heeled enthusiasts before the ink on the glowing reviews had dried. Turns out that while most Americans don’t want wagons, hip in-the-know car freaks can’t get enough high-performance wagons. Additionally, demand for the excellent RS3 is sky high right now. Meaning that Americans want more fast Audis. Bringing the RS4 to the States is therefor logical. (And we all know the German stereotypes about logic.) Having said that, it would be logical for Audi to bring the wicked cool RS3 Sportback to the U.S., as it too is a wagon. Right? Of course right!
We reached out to Audi for comment, “There is no plan to bring the RS4 to the U.S. market at this time.” Emphasis added by us, if you catch our drift and read between the lines. As stated in our review of the RS4, “[Our] two big gripes are the fact the manual sport seats aren’t coming, and that neither is the RS4.
That said, the RS6 proved to be a sales success for Audi, and who knows what the future may bring?” Seems like now we know. When? Our best guess is that the RS4 will be brought Stateside for the final two years of its run, 2024 and 2025. While we can’t see much further into the future than that, we can take an educated guess that the next-generation RS4 will be electric.
