2016 Mazda 2 with LED lights now in M'sia – RM91k

As we’ve previously reported, the 2016 Mazda 2 has been introduced in Malaysia, bringing with it an updated equipment list. Of course, there is also a revision in price to reflect the changes done to the B-segment car, which is still available in both sedan and hatchback body styles.

At long last, the Mazda 2 finally gets LED headlights (with signature LED DRLs), bringing the car up to speed in terms of looks with the rest of the carmaker’s vehicle range. The headlights feature auto levelling, but no Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS).

The update is reflective of that in the Thai market, where the Mazda 2 debuted with LED headlights during the 2015 Thai Motor Expo. For those who weren’t fans of the halogen units fitted previously, this update should make the car more enticing as compared to before. At the rear, the 2 soldiers on with bulb-type tail lights. The wheels are still 16-inch alloys (with 185/60R16 tyres).

Beyond the LED headlights, everything else on the 2 remains exactly as before. Under the hood, you’ll find a 1.5 litre SkyActiv-G four-cylinder direct injected petrol engine (with i-Stop), providing 114 hp at 6,000 rpm and 148 Nm at 4,000 rpm. A six-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic transmission is mated to the mill.

Inside, there are still leather seats, single zone automatic climate control, manually adjustable seats, paddle shifters and heads-up display. Infotainment comes in the form of the MZD Connect system, with six speakers, a seven-inch touchscreen and Commander Control knob/buttons. The system can be upgraded with a navigation function a cost option (RM1,270).

Safety kit remains the same with two airbags (driver and passenger), with ABS with EBD and brake assist, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Isofix child seat anchors all fitted as standard.

As for pricing, the Mazda 2 (sedan and hatchback) now starts at RM90,766.30, representing a RM5,300 premium over the car’s previous price tag (RM85,466.30). However, these prices only apply for 2s painted in Snowflake White Pearl, Aluminium Metallic and Metropolitan Grey.

If you want your 2 in the brand’s trademark Soul Red colour, you’ll have to fork out an additional RM530. The prices quoted here are on-the-road without insurance, and includes a three-year warranty (100,000 km) and free maintenance (60,000 km) package, whichever comes first. The Mazda 2 continues to be imported from Thailand (CBU).

Bermaz also offers a list of optional accessories to spruce up your purchase further. A ‘sports kit’ consisting of front and rear bumper lips, side skirts and rear spoiler, will cost an additional RM2,300 for the sedan and RM2,370 for the hatchback. Other cost options include a chromed exhaust tailpipe (RM70), boot tray (RM130) and stainless steel scuff plate with LED lighting (RM275).
